I’ve been needing to get a Mac Pro for some time now – that’s Apple’s top of the line, 8-core computer… or, more accurately, a professional workstation.

The beauty of being a top internet marketer, and more specifically, a top affiliate marketer, is that I rarely need to buy the things I want anymore!

Take today for instance – I needed a Mac Pro to run some of the heavy apps that are weighing down my iMac desktop computer – and lo and behold, I won a Mac Pro as an affiliate prize.

I have lots of other goodies as a result of being a top affiliate. Apple TV, home theater, camcorder, GPS, you name it… all the result of winning prizes during affiliate launches. Even a few oddities, such as the big set of “Brass Balls” sitting on my desk courtesy of Russell Brunson!

And the best part?

I don’t even promote for the prizes – I promote for the cash! So getting an unexpected big box of goodies in the mail along with those five-figure checks is just icing on the cake.

If you’re an information marketer like me, or even an author who hasn’t made the transition to the internet yet, don’t underestimate the profit potential of promoting for others as an affiliate. You’ll be surprised at how much money you make doing it, how many great prizes you’ll accumulate, and, best of all, how much fun you’ll have in the process!

It’s pretty well-known that most top marketers are night owls. We sleep late and get up late. In addition, our most productive and creative hours tend to be late at night, when the rest of the “normal” world is sound asleep.

If you’re anything like me and you get furious at the notion that you should “get up because everyone else is up,” take a look at this new study released by the Henry Ford Hospital Sleep Disorders Center:

- People who felt “well rested” after eight hours of sleep actually became more alert and performed better after ten hours of sleep.

- “Night owls” aced a creativity test with flying colors while their “morning person” counterparts struggled to pass at all.

- The stress hormone cortisol peaks in your body around 7 am; getting up anywhere near that time causes you to experience stress.

So, don’t be ashamed of your “night owl” sleep schedule. Embrace it and know that it’s getting you far ahead of the rest of society with their early to bed, early to rise nonsense!

When I began selling products online, I never once intended to become an affiliate marketer. In fact, I didn’t even know what affiliate marketing was! As an author of books – first my own self-published, then published books – affiliate marketing was unknown to me because, in the world of authors, there are usually no affiliate links. In our world, if I mail to promote a book, the other author returns the favor. Nice and simple. No affiliate checks or programs to mess with!

Internet marketing is different, however, and affiliate marketing and JVs are a prime source of traffic for most marketers.

When some big-name marketers first approached me to promote their products, I had no idea an affiliate check would soon be in my mailbox. I just assumed that internet marketers did things the way authors did – I’d mail for them, and they’d mail for me. Imagine my surprise when a big fat check arrived a few weeks later!

I’m now considered a top affiliate marketer. I routinely make five figures whenever I promote a big launch, and internet marketers are always asking me how I do it.

And therein lies the irony – I’m a top affiliate marketer because I never wanted to be one!

If you backwards analyze my business model, the reason why I do so well promoting affiliate products is simple. It’s because affiliate marketing is an afterthought for me. I have a large and very loyal list, and as a result, they listen when I promote. My unsubscribe rates are ridiculously low, even when I promote hard. By contrast, most new internet marketers who decide to earn their income as affiliates do poorly. The reason, quite simply, is because top affiliates are usually not just affiliates. They are people who have a product and a platform – THAT is why people listen when they promote.

Let’s look at the reasons why I do so well as an affiliate, and how I built my business up to this level:

1. My business promotes my own products first.

I started my business to promote my own products. Not someone else’s. As a result of this, I have a solid platform and people can identify me with specific markets and niches. I have established expert credibility in my chosen niches, and this goes a long way to achieving long-term credibility with my list.

2. My list provides high-quality content, not advertising.

When someone signs up for my list, with a ten chapter free download as an incentive, they are signing up to receive content. Do I sell my products via my list? Yes, of course I do – that’s why it exists in the first place – but I do it very subtly. I pack each newsletter with powerful information and tips, and gently remind readers at the very end of the newsletter that they can get a lot more where that came from by purchasing my product.

What I DO NOT do is send out pushy, spammy, high-pressure content trying to push people into buying. Doing that would have destroyed my success a long time ago!

3. I don’t promote affiliate products often.

Nobody joined my list to hear third-party product promotions. They joined to get a free download from me, followed by free content weekly. As a result, I don’t promote affiliate products to my list often. This keeps the integrity and quality of my list intact, and keeps unsubscribes low. Furthermore, when I do promote an affiliate product to my list, it’s a BIG hit, because the leads are receptive. They don’t expect a sales pitch when they open one of my emails.

4. I only promote high-quality products and marketers.

I don’t promote anything unless I know firsthand that it’s a high-quality product or service. In addition, I don’t promote for marketers unless I know for a fact that they are the real deal, and they are who they say they are. We all know there are marketers all over the internet making bogus income claims and exaggerating their success; therefore, I don’t promote for anyone unless I know for an absolute fact that they have done everything they claim to have done.

And, while I’m thinking of it, a word on list-building: I obviously have a large list. That’s how I promote. But, unlike many new marketers, I didn’t build that list through JVs. Yes, JVs are the fastest way to build a list. And if you’re brand-new to internet marketing and have no list, that’s a good way to begin building one. The problem, however, is that your list isn’t exclusive. You’re picking up names that are on several other marketers’ lists.

The reason I’m able to do so well in big promotions and blow out a lot of the big gurus is simply because my list is exclusive. By building it in several niches via AdWords, YouTube marketing, and more, I have names that the others don’t. That’s how I, with a list of around 100,000, can outperform marketers with much larger lists. It’s because they may have more subscribers, but I have more exclusives who won’t see the offer from anyone else.

In summary, keep these points in mind. If you work on building your own business with your own products first, you’ll automatically become a powerful affiliate marketer in a very short time!

AdWords, when used properly, will not only grow your business and list exponentially but it is very cost effective as well. There are many people who have tried using a pay-per-click program such as Google AdWords but have failed. Why did they fail? One of the main reasons that internet marketers fail with their AdWords campaigns is because they are lazy. Honest, but true. AdWords is not a guided missile to riches that you can simply fire and forget. Like all things in life that provide a great reward, a successful AdWords campaign is something that you have to work at.

1.) Understand the Nature of the Beast

The most important thing in a successful AdWords campaign is developing an understanding of the system. It may not be rocket science but it is pretty darned close. Before you begin, head over to the AdWords site and read the FAQ. Then hit the Google search engine and visit some message boards dedicated to AdWords. If need be, pick up a guide and read it as well. The more that you know about the system and how it works, the more you will be able to take advantage of it.

Take the opinions of others into consideration but do not let them guide you. On some of the internet marketing forums you will find that many people are against AdWords and other pay-per-click systems. Many times this is because they jumped in with both feet before they understood the system and therefore they failed. You are not going to fail because you are going to take the time to do your research BEFORE starting your first campaign.

2.) Set Spending Limits

AdWords gives you the ability to set daily spending limits for keywords. Use this feature to control the cost of your ads. If you only want to spend $75 per day on advertising, set that as your limit and the system will stop serving your ads when your limit has been reached.

3.) Create Relevant Ad Copy

When creating an ad the goal is to achieve top placement at the lowest cost. One way to accomplish this goal is to include your keyword in both the headline and body of your ad. This increases the relevancy of your ad and thereby lowers the cost.

4.) Use Different Types of Keywords

How often your ad is displayed and how it is triggered is really up to you. There are 3 main keyword types that you can use.

Broad Match – example: fine dining??This phrase is entered without quotations or brackets. You ad would be triggered anytime a user enters a search string that included the words “fine” and “dining” regardless of order or placement.

Phrase Match – example “fine dining”??Enter this type of phrase with quotation marks surrounding it. Your ad will be triggered by searches that contain the words “fine dining” in that order.

Exact Match – example: [fine dining]??This type of keyword is entered with brackets. To trigger your ad a user would have to conduct a search that exactly matches the keyword phrase.

Use of keywords and match types can help your keep your costs within reason and lead to a successful AdWords campaign.

The 4 topics discussed here are but a few of the many strategies that you need to learn and understand to be truly successful in the AdWords game. Get as much information as you possibly can and use it to explode your business.

Those of you who have read Cold Calling Is A Waste Of Time know that my first taste of business and the idea of not working took place at a young age for me.

When I was 13 or 14 years old, I became interested in amateur radio (I’m WA2W, for you fellow hams out there) and, unable to afford new radio equipment – which is very expensive – I looked into buying used equipment, and was directed to Mr. John Kakstys, W2FNT, pictured here. I just learned that John has passed away on August 1st.

John ran a business out of his home, dealing in amateur radio equipment. My first visit to his basement was like visiting a wonderland. It was set up like a store, full of every type of ham radio equipment you could imagine!

My friend Tom, another ham (WJ2Q), and I would go to John’s house as much as we could just to marvel at all the fun equipment he had for sale.

But, there was another aspect to visiting John and seeing his business in action, and that was the idea that it was so easy to make money by buying a piece of equipment at low cost from someone who wanted to get rid of it, cleaning it up a bit, and selling it for a much higher price to someone else.

As I explained in Cold Calling Is A Waste Of Time, I was making more money “flipping” ham radio gear than most of my friends did at their summer jobs … and I wasn’t even working. It was all fun for me! No getting up early, no boss, no schedule… hmm, do you think that early experience has influenced me to this day?

Thank you, John, for that early experience. You showed me how easy it is to make money by providing people with quality products that they are willing to pay a fair price to get. And how anyone can have a business and avoid a job if they really want to. We’ll miss you!

I’ve been meaning to try Google’s Website Optimizer for a while now.

I finally got that chance today, and not by choice – I upgraded my server to PHP5 last night, and while it’s been a great improvement overall, my split-testing script apparently isn’t compatible.

So, with that in mind, I finally logged into my AdWords account, clicked on Website Optimizer, and got started.

It’s very easy to set up, and uses javascript snippets inserted into the pages rather than a php redirect like my old script (and like most traditional split-testing scripts), resulting in faster performance for users.

The best feature of all though is the built-in multivariate testing option. Anyone who has used multivariate testing knows just how powerful it is, but you also know how expensive the software can be.

Well, with Google Website Optimizer, it’s free!

This is big news because multivariate testing is SO much more powerful than a traditional A/B split-test. With multivariate testing, you can choose A/B options for multiple pieces of your page. For example, you can test two different headlines, two different banners, images, and pieces of copy, all at the same time! The software randomly serves up different combinations and concludes which one is most effective.

So if you haven’t tried Google Website Optimizer yet, you owe it to yourself and your marketing to check it out.

Since a lot of marketers have had success with using autodialer telephone campaigns, selling coaching programs over the phone, and more, I decided maybe I should try collecting telephone numbers with newsletter signups rather than just from my paying customers.

I wasn’t sure if my subscribers would react positively or negatively to being asked for their phone numbers, so I set up an A/B split-test where half of new site visitors would see the original opt-in form, and the other half would see the new form with the phone number field added.

The results have surprised me: The form with the phone number field is getting an equal number of signups as the original form that only asks for name and email.

On top of that, almost everyone is freely entering a phone number, even though the field is optional!

This is very encouraging news for any marketer who has an opt-in form – and I think that would include practically all marketers – but who hasn’t made an attempt at collecting phone numbers.

Like I said, I don’t know how, or even if, I’ll use these phone numbers, but at least I’ll have a massive database of them if I ever choose to. And that is something of such high value that it can’t easily be described in terms of mere dollars.
